Beijing Reacts Sharply to New U.S. Policy on Taiwan

Beijing Reacts Sharply to New U.S. Policy on Taiwan

The government of Taipei, which had already announced its intention to deepen military cooperation with the United States through joint exercises and technology transfer, viewed the new American strategy as protection of its right to self-defense.

From a pro-Taiwan perspective, this moment marks a turning point: the combination of U.S. support and Taipei's commitment responds to the need to ensure peace, democracy, and territorial integrity against a revisionist power.

In this context, the international community faces a crossroads: allow China to consolidate its regional dominance, or support the right of the 23 million Taiwanese to define their own future.

Through a spokesperson for its foreign ministry, the Chinese regime insisted that the island of Taiwan constitutes an "inalienable" part of its territory and denounced any external support for its government in Taipei as a "grave interference."

"Taiwan is the red line that cannot be crossed," the official statement warned, clearly referencing the recent White House strategic document.

The text of the U.S. National Security Strategy 2025 — published last week by the Donald Trump administration — marked global deterrence against possible aggressions in the strait a priority and reaffirmed that maintaining Washington's "military superiority" is key to preventing conflict.

To this end, it promotes strengthening alliances in the Indo-Pacific region and the military framework necessary to ensure that any attack on Taiwan would have a "too high" cost for its aggressors.

This strategy set off alarms in Beijing, where — through the voice of its diplomacy — the publication was considered an "incitement" to separatist forces and a direct step toward confrontation.

Beijing did not rule out exercising a "firm defense" of its sovereign interests, warning that it will respond forcefully to what it considers a threat in the region.

For the island, China's diplomatic offensive was no surprise.
